The United States Men's National Team battled to a 1-1 draw against Mexico in a heated World Cup qualifying match at Estadio Azteca on Tuesday night. Christian Pulisic equalized in the 73rd minute with a stunning free kick that curled into the top corner past a diving goalkeeper.
Mexico had taken the lead through Santi Gimenez in the 38th minute after a defensive miscommunication allowed him a clear look at goal. The U.S. pressed hard in the second half and was rewarded when Pulisic stepped up to deliver his seventh international goal of the qualifying campaign.
The result leaves the United States in second place in the CONCACAF qualifying table with 16 points from nine matches. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed satisfaction with the comeback mentality but acknowledged the team must be more clinical in upcoming fixtures.
