NFL owners have unanimously approved expanding the regular season from 17 to 18 games starting in 2027, adding a third bye week and increasing the salary cap by 12% to compensate for the additional game.
Schedule Changes
Each team will play 18 games over 21 weeks with 3 bye weeks. The preseason will be reduced to 2 games. The playoff structure remains unchanged with 14 teams qualifying.
Player Union Agreement
The NFLPA agreed to the expansion in exchange for a 12% salary cap increase, enhanced injury protections, and guaranteed roster bonuses for the 18th game.
