Major League Baseball has announced that starting in 2027, pitch clock violations will result in automatic balls rather than warnings, further speeding up game pace after the successful 2023 rule change.

Current vs New Rules

Currently, pitchers get warnings before penalties. Under the new rule, any pitch not started within 15 seconds (bases empty) or 20 seconds (runners on) results in an immediate automatic ball.

Impact Data

Since the original pitch clock, average game time has dropped from 3:04 to 2:32. The league expects the stricter enforcement to shave another 5-8 minutes.
